what Oncology Rehab patients are saying about our therapists
"Julia has saved my life…”
DR 2010
“I’ve found the staff at Oncology Rehab to be professional, supportive, and upbeat. Following my double mastectomy and 25 radiation treatments, I began participating in the Pilates-based exercise program. Pilates has strengthened my core (a necessity after surgery and chemo), given me a way to meet other survivors, and opened my eyes to what IS possible during and after my breast cancer journey. The individualized coaching during these sessions has been invaluable in my learning how to move and love my “revised” body.”

“My doctor recommended Oncology Rehab after a double mastectomy and I’m very glad they did. At Oncology Rehab, Julia helped me understand the effects of lymph node removal and taught me what I could do to improve recovery. The treatments are pleasant – not painful – and I regained full mobility very quickly. I feel lucky to have found them.”

“Oncology Rehab gives a very needed service to cancer patients and others with a need for lymphedema relief. All of the staff is friendly, helpful and caring. Rehabilitation Specialist Layna Shorter is, in my opinion, the best. She has a great knowledge of the lymphatic system as she is always continuing her education. She has hundreds of hours of experience working on people, in all stages of lymphedema. After I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I underwent a double mastectomy and twenty seven lymph nodes were also removed. I had 18 rounds of chemotherapy, followed by 33 treatments of radiation. The regiment I went through has left my muscles very rigid. Layna has kept me from developing lymphedema and also worked my range of motion back to where it should be. I am now at ease with life from this point, using the skills she taught me for lymphedema prevention and exercise. I also know, if I do have a flare-up, she will be there for me. Layna is much more to me than a caregiver, she has allowed me to gain the confidence to live my life the way I want to.”

“Oncology Rehab was recommended to me by my doctor. She didn’t know what exactly was wrong with me or what caused it, but she said the people at Oncology Rehab would be able to help me. That’s where I saw Layna Shorter, PT, DPT, CLT. Layna knew exactly what I had -“cording,” [Mondor’s disease] after a double mastectomy- and how to treat it. I had been in tremendous pain, where touching my torso or abdomen resulted in me crying. Pants or anything cinched at the waist had to be avoided. I was terrified at the thought of Layna touching me, but she talked me through it and after two sessions with Layna, I was back to wearing normal clothing, even a seatbelt! Layna was always sweet, knowledgeable, patient and gentle. She advised me on what to do and what to avoid. Layna was practical and honest and answered all my questions even if she had to research in the evening to find answers. I was in a sad, scared, painful place when I came to see Layna. Layna allayed my fears, eased my pain and lifted my spirits more and more until I was free of my issues. I can’t recommend Layna enough, or thank her enough for her care and friendship.”

“My oncologist sent me to Oncology Rehab when she heard that I couldn’t afford physical therapy at the facility where I had been going. Not only did I find Oncology Rehab to be more affordable, I was matched with a physical therapist who specializes in lymphedema prevention, Brianna Obert. Her treatments gave me much-needed, heavenly relief. I had cording in my arm and Brianna got rid of it (easier written than done!) She explained the workings of the lymphatic system so that I could completely understand it. I felt so comfortable with Brianna that I invited her to attend my implant-exchange surgery and later, hung on her every word when she told me all about it. I received great physical therapy and a solid education about my “new” body through Oncology Rehab. The office atmosphere: professional, warm, and friendly. The billing department–easy to work with. Who could ask for more? I emphatically recommend Oncology Rehab, and only Oncology Rehab, for oncology rehabilitation. Plain and simple”

“Shannon helped me a great deal in my mastectomy and reconstruction and post surgery recovery. Having had experience with Pilates several years ago, I can tell if a teacher knows what she’s talking about – Shannon definitely does! I see dramatic improvement in my strength, posture and overall feeling of well being. Thanks Shannon!”
